An introduction to writing of fictional texts based on historical events. With award-winning Kenyan novelist Peter Kimani. Submit a half-page story line to be considered.

Workshop 2

Translating History

Jethro Soutar will cover every stage of the process, from finding source texts to attracting a publisher, before considering some of the challenges specific to translating history: control of period detail and diction; multilingual textures; decolonising the mind while remaining true to cultural context. Jethro will use translations of Lusophone African novels as examples, but no knowledge of Portuguese is required to attend the workshop.

Workshop 3

Filming history without a camera - The history of film

Participants will learn about the history of African film and acquire practical skills for filming history, albeit without a camera.

How can history be told in radio programmes? Participants collect ideas, develop concepts and radio features. No prior knowledge in radio production required. With radio journalist Michael Schweres
