Mauritania

A poignant, lyrical coming-of-age tale set in Mauritius. It follows 15-year-old Noemi as she moves from a slum into a wealthy household, where her innocence and burgeoning identity collide with the brutal legacies of slavery and racial injustice.

Anita Ram returns to Mauritius after her marriage collapses in cold, racist Britain. Back on the island, she finds herself haunted by its colonial past while seeking tentative hope in simple comforts—her mother’s cooking, childhood memories, and the stirrings of a new romance.
